William Charles Mathes Jr., 97, of Jonesboro, passed away on January 24, 2026, at St. Elizabeth’s Place. He was born on May 21, 1928, in Yellville, Arkansas, to William Charles Sr. and Anna Lee McAnally Mathes.

Over the course of his long and varied working life, Mr. Mathes devoted fifteen years to serving as a counselor at Jefferson House. He also spent time with the Forestry Service in California, worked for the railroad in St. Louis, and was employed with North American Van Lines. A man of steady faith, he was a member of Nettleton Church of Christ.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews, along with many great-nieces and great-nephews who carry forward his memory. He was preceded in death by thirteen brothers and sisters, as well as five stepbrothers and stepsisters.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 2, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home Chapel, with James Johnson officiating. Visitation will take place from 1–2 p.m. at the chapel. He will be laid to rest at a later date in Trinity Cemetery.
