Mayor William Leroy Burden, 81, a life-long resident of Cash, Arkansas, passed away April 5, 2013 at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center. He was born March 22, 1932 to the late Bill and Cecil Burke Burden. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law and community leader. After retiring from General Electric in 1991, he and long time friend, Ken Gerber, started Elmer's Bait Company. During this time he also served the community on the Craighead County Quorum Court. He was elected Mayor of the City of Cash in 1995 and served in this position until present time. He also served the City of Cash as the Head of the Water Department. He was a life-long member of the Cash Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for many years. He was also a 32nd degree Mason. He loved the Cash Community and was always a friend to the people of Cash. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Norma Best- Burden, of the home, two daughters, Melissa "Missy" Tedford and husband Bob, and Sondra Walker and husband Dan, a son Kenny Burden and wife Beth all of Jonesboro. Seven grandchildren, Stacey Hogue-Ford, Keith Palmer, Daniel Walker, Brandon Walker and wife Meagan, Phillip Walker and wife Erin, Haley Burden and Noah Burden. Six great grandchildren, Kaylyn Hogue, Lauren Hogue, Sydney Ford, Vaden Palmer, Ferin Palmer and Barrett Walker. A celebration of his life will be 10:00 am Monday April 8, 2013 in the chapel of Gregg Langford-Bookout Funeral Home, 300 W. Matthews Ave. Jonesboro, with Rev. Johnny Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Cash Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 at the funeral home. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Justin Best, Kevin Bryant, Kyle Best, Justin A. Best, Kris Best and James Best. Honorary Pallbearers will include the men of Cash Baptist Church, the Cash City Council, Cash First Responders, Cooter Farmer, Dalton Watkins, K.G. Harlan, Lewis Johnson, Bobby Johnson and George Johnson. Lasting memorials may be made to the Cash Baptist Church.
