Jonesboro- William Thomas "Bill" Summers, 88, passed away, Wednesday, June 12, 2013, after a long bout with pancreatic cancer. He was born to late Labah Allen and Ladie Myrtle Summers in Jonesboro. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, he fished locally around here. In his later years his wife liked for him to fish with a buddy for safety concerns. He was a devoted member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Missionary Church for about 55 years and over the years taught several Sunday school classes. He was drafted into the armed services after World War II. His spell of asthma kept him out of WWII but was drafted into the Korean conflict; he went to Fort Hood, Texas for deployment to Korea. Served 1 yr and 2 months, spent about 6 months in North Korea where the action was. He was on a truck to head north to a battle but was pulled because he didn\u0027t have any warm clothes. Many of those boys never returned from that battle, some that did return came with frozen finger and toes. They were forced out of North Korea by the Chinese and served out the rest of his tour in Pusan, South Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal and Bronze Star. In 1951 he married Christine Dorton, had two children, William T Summers Jr. and Susan D. Summers Burns. He had a wonderful job and retired in 1986 after almost 32 years with General Electric. He enjoyed a long retirement gardening, fishing and hunting in mostly good health until this last year. He was also preceded in death by five of his six siblings; Leslie Summers, Louise Yesenski, Mildred Jones, Glenda Brading and Betty French; a granddaughter, Crystal Burns. He is survived by his wife Christine Dorton Summers; his children and their spouses, Tom and Doris Summers of Murray, Kentucky and Susan and Bill Burns of Phoenix, AZ; a sister Maxine Harribedian of Fresno Ca; three grandchildren, Sarah Cappello, Lori Cauthen and Stephanie Summers and seven great grandchildren, Nolan Packard, Austin Cappello, Ava Cappello, Chase Cappello, Liam Summers, Tanya Summers and LuLu Summers; two step-great-grandchildren, Sadie Cappello and Saphire Cappello. A celebration of his life will be held 10:00 am, Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home with Rev. Robbie McMasters and Rev. Joel McMasters officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Friday, June 14, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:30 pm at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home at 300 W. Matthews Ave. Honor to serve as pallbearers are Mark Turner, David Summers, Mike Hogan, Tommy Hogan, Jeff French, Steve Turner and Johnny French and as honorary pallbearers, Terry Vickers and Melton Cooper and the Adult Sunday School Class of Ridgecrest Baptist Church. The family request lasting memorials to Ridgecrest Missionary Baptist Church or Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.
