Obituary

Sidney Mize, 77, departed this life Saturday April 12, 2025 at NEA Baptist Hospital in Jonesboro, AR.  Sid was born December 3, 1947 in Harrisburg, AR, living his early life on a farm in rural Poinsett county.  In his teen years he moved to rural Jonesboro where he helped his mother in their country store and learned carpentry from his stepfather.  Sid graduated from Nettleton High School in 1965 and enrolled at Arkansas State.

He joined the Marine Corps in Nov 1967, completed aviation training and reported for active duty in March 1968 servicing as crew chief and mechanic to HMMT 302 Helicopter Training Sqd responsible for training Pilots and Crews being deployed to Vietnam.  His overseas duty took him to Okinawa as Section Sgt and later deployed aboard the USS New Orleans in service in Vietnam.  Sid was honorably discharged in 1972 and married his wife Vada.  Five years later he joined the Arkansas Army National Guard and in 1981 went active duty servicing as a recruiter for Jonesboro and surrounding areas.   After 10 years he transferred to Troop Command at Camp Robinson as an intelligence analyst.  Sid retired from the military on Dec 31, 1996 at the rank of E-7 SFC.   He returned to school at Arkansas State and received a BS in Industrial Technology and worked at GE and the Arkansas Workforce as a local Veterans Employer Representative.  In retirement, Sid and Vada loved being outdoors enjoying their yard, garden, and pool area and sharing it with anyone that visited.

He is survived by three children, Wade Mize of Texas, Carla Chrisco of Tennessee, and Glenn Mize of Missouri, his sisters Sandra Paden and Karen Hancock, nephews nieces and six grandchildren who he loved and cherished greatly.

Sidney was proceeded in death by his wife of 48 years Vada, his mother Ruby (Jim) Propes and brother Jimmy Mize.

Visitation will be held Saturday April 19, 2025 from 10-11 am at the Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home Chapel followed by a celebration of his life at 11 am with Eugene Merrill officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park.

Memorials may be sent to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Sidney's name.
