Obituary

Jonesboro- Sarah Jane Duffel passed away Saturday morning at St. Bernards Medical Center. She was born in Paragould on January 19, 1925 to S.C. "Dick" and Ruth Walker Bentley.

She grew up in Paragould and spent summers in Pine Bluff with her family while her father worked for the Cotton Belt Railroad. In 1940, that career brought the family to Jonesboro. She attended Jonesboro High School, where she met her future husband, WA Duffel. They graduated in 1943 and married on July 14, 1944. By that time, WA was a Medical Corpsman with the United States Army and quickly shipped out overseas to the European Theater of Operations. When he returned in February of 1946, their lives together began.

She worked at C \u0026 S Department Store and WA worked at Farmers Union Funeral Home. In March 1947, they moved to St. Louis while WA attended the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science. Upon his graduation in December, 1947 they came back to Jonesboro. She worked at home and raised their children and returned to work in the late 1960's with the Jonesboro Public School System as a teacher's aid and secretary. She retired in 1987 and spent the rest of her life serving her church and cooking and taking care of her family and especially her grandchildren.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jonesboro and had been a member since joining on Easter Sunday, 1942. She was also a member of the Friendship Sunday School class and the Susanna Wesley Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, Brooks "Jack" Hornsby Bentley and William "Bill" Hardesty Bentley; two sisters, Mary Alice Bentley and Martha Carolyn Gilmer Davis.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Ann Craft (Tom); her son, Richard Duffel (Janet); a granddaughter, Merideth Duffel Michaelis; a grandson, Jonathan Duffel (Stephanie); four great-grandchildren, Emily Michaelis, Haley Michaelis, Ethan Duffel, and Mason Duffel all of Jonesboro.

Visitation will be Monday, October 31st at Gregg- Langford Bookout Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, November 1, 2016 with Rev. Patty Soward officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.
