Obituary

Jonesboro- Orville Binkley, 98, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013. Orville was born July 19, 1914 at Emory. Mr. Binkley was raised at Evening Shade and graduated from Sloan Hendrix at Imboden. He had a talent and deep love for art. He attended the Harris Art Institute in Nashville, Tennessee and the Memphis Art Academy and also studied under a number of noted artists. Mr. Binkley served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. After his service, he married Iva Sue Thompson and they made their home in Jonesboro. He was employed by Haven Emerson Architect Engineers as a draftsman working on the plans for the Army Air Base at Walnut Ridge. He formed the Binkley Advertising System for outdoor advertising and had billboards all across the state. He was the first to own and make neon signs in Northeast Arkansas. He had an art supply and frame shop where he taught art workshops for over 50 years. Mr. Binkley retired in 2004, which gave him more time to devote to his art. Many homes across the state have his paintings hanging. Mr. Binkley was a member of First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and was a deacon for many years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 60 years and was a founding member of the Visual Art League in Jonesboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Mary Lee Runsick Binkley; wives, Iva Sue Thompson Binkley and Ann Hatfield Binkley. He is survived by a son and his wife, Jim and Vickie Binkley; a grandson and his wife, Aaron and Beth Binkley and special friend, Mrs. Jennifer Schoonover. A celebration of his life will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park and Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home, 300 W. Matthews Ave. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Fellowship Sunday School Class.
