Obituary

Jonesboro -Myrth Hibbard was embraced by Angels on Friday, September 27, 2019. She was 101 years young.

She was born in Pitts on Nov 22, 1917 to the late Earl George Sr. and Ethel Bryant Howard.
Myrth was a granddaughter of John Howard, a justice of the peace of Dobson Township in Poinsett County, Arkansas that gave the community of Uno its name. The Howards were one of the pioneer families and helped with some of the first rice harvesting in the Long Creek Community of Poinsett County. She graduated from Weiner High School in 1936 and graduated from Arkansas State College 1961.

Myrth was married to Robert A. Hibbard on May 3, 1944. They were married until Robert passed away in 1970 after 26 years as a loving couple. She was a Life member of the P.T.A., member of U.M.W, A.A.R.P. and Retired Teachers Association of N.E.A. Robert and Myrth owned Hibbard's Service Station for years and numerous young men (Dale Wright and Paul McKnight being two of them) work for the Hibbard's at their station during the 50s and 60s.

Myrth Hibbard was a former 1st grade schoolteacher at Weiner Public Schools (1946-1963 and 1971-1977). She also taught 1st grade in Sherwood (1964-1970). She retired from teaching in 1977 and moved to Jonesboro. She began her teaching career in 1936 at Long Creek School (1936-1943) in a two-room country school that her dad had help build at Uno, Arkansas, just out of Grubbs.

She was a "Rosie the Riveter" working on B-24 planes in Memphis during WWII.
She and Robert did not have any children of their own but she claimed all her former students as hers. When she would go to Weiner Myrth was a rock star with all her former students and friends. Everyone wanted their photo taken with her.

In later years, Myrth enjoying going to family reunions and the school reunions of the different classes at Weiner and Long Creek. She loved all her students and was very proud to be a Weiner Cardinal.

She enjoyed her flowers and gardening and put out a garden every year. Just this year at age 101 she broke ground and planted a garden of tomatoes and okra - She had a GREEN Thumb!

After retiring from teaching she was devoted to her grandnieces Lisa and Leah - She took care of them after school and helped raise and teacher them their ABC's to help grow one more generation of the Hibbard-Howard family - like her mother Ethel did with Lisa and Leah's mother, Teressa, two decades before.

On her 100th birthday in 2017 she had one of the largest birthday parties that the Jonesboro Country Club had ever seen with over 300 in attendance with standing room only. She had so much fun that day visiting with friends, family and former students. She spent lots of hours looking at the pictures and reading her cards from that day.

Myrth was very devoted to her family. Survivors include her niece, Teressa A. Howard (W. Danny) Honnoll; two grandnieces, Lisa M. (Ashton) Silas and Leah M. Honnoll all of Jonesboro; two great grandnephew/niece William D. Silas and Emily Kathryn Silas both of Jonesboro and numerous Bryant and Howard cousins and Hibbard nieces and nephews.
