Obituary

Jonesboro- Madaline Vivian Holland Doak, 102, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Ridgecrest Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jonesboro.

She was born on May 17, 1916, in Lunsford. Her parents were the late Robert R. Holland and Jennie Taylor Holland. Her mother died during the influenza pandemic of 1918. As a very young child, she was reared by her loving father and grandfather, Fergus Wasson Taylor. When she was five-years-old, her father married Mattie Wells, who lovingly raised her as her own. Madaline began high school at the Training School of Arkansas State College and graduated from Bay High School during The Great Depression. After attending Arkansas State College (now ASU) one year, she began teaching at the Lunsford School. During that time, she met the love of her life, Waylon O. Doak, who was teaching at the Prairie School. They married December 27, 1938, in Jonesboro. During their first several years of marriage, they taught together in the two-room Prairie School. Madaline taught the first four grades, and Waylon taught the upper four grades. They moved to Lake City in 1940 where they reared their three children. Waylon was Superintendent of the Lake City School until his retirement, and Madaline retired as a teacher having graduated from ASU many years earlier. They were married 55 years before Waylon's passing in 1993.

Madaline spent her life taking care of others. As the oldest living daughter of her family, she took care of the younger children and even taught her sisters, Ann and Bobbie, in school. She, also, provided food to shut-ins and others, as needed.

She was always active in church. She was recognized by the Lake City First Baptist Church for teaching Sunday School 64 years. After teaching in the Beginner Department many years, she taught the adult ladies Sunday School class until her health prevented it. She was a long-time worker in the Woman's Missionary Union and a leader for the Girls' Auxiliary, planning numerous GA coronations and mission activities.

In her later years, she was content working crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper or a good book, and looking forward to visits by family and friends. She was a lovely person who lived a life of service to others as a teacher in school and in church. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Madaline is survived by her three children, Dr. Robert Waylon Doak (Darlene) of Marshville, NC; Janice Dyer of Jonesboro; and Carol Doak Rogow (Dr. Robert) of Richmond, KY; three grandchildren, Brad Dyer of Walcott; Carol Renee Dyer of Jonesboro; and Trent Robert Doak of NC; and one great-grandchild, Madaline Grace Doak of NC; one sister, Bobbie Holland Coleman (Dr. Lucien) of Weatherford, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three siblings who died as children: Alleen, Woodrow, and James Harold Holland. Her other brother and sisters who passed away before her were Wasson Robert Holland, Ethel Ann Holland Brown, and Mary Louise Holland Harlan.

The family wishes to thank her special caregivers, Wanda Hastings, Tina Harrision, Carolyn Keller, and Renee Prunty, and the staffs of Morningside and Ridgecrest.
