Leo John Bergman passed away on March 12, 2011 in his home in Pocahontas, Arkansas. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final hour. Leo was born in Paris, AR on July 25, 1924. He moved to Randolph County some 83 years ago. He was one of nine children raised in the Engleberg Community. His parents were George and Anna (Rieder) Bergman. Leo's lifelong work was as an electrician. He worked for several years for Stewart Electric in Jonesboro. He often had to travel out of state for work. He retired in 1980 and supplemented his income by chopping wood and mowing yards. Leo was a strong and physically able individual who worked hard all his life. Leo married Charlene Ann Jansen on November 3, 1943. Leo and Charlene celebrated the birth of nine children. Francis Marie (Ramsey), Leona Ann (Emery), Charlotte Katherine (Potter), Leo John, Jr., George Charles, James O'Neil, Louis Anthony, Mary Willena (Broadway) and Theresa Elizabeth (Hausman). Leo had 26 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, George and Joe Bergman and sisters, Emma (Blount), Clara (Jezik), Rose Bergman, and Mary (Frankenberger). Leo John Bergman wanted to be remembered for his military service to his country. He was shipped overseas in 1944 as a replacement. He served in various locations in Europe for the next two years. When he returned home he continued his military commitment and served in the US Army Reserves. In October 1949, Leo was once again called into service. He was shipped to Okinawa, Japan where he guarded an ammunitions dump. While serving in the Army, Leo received the following decorations and citations EAME Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and two overseas service bars. Leo was a devout Catholic. He prayed daily and he took great solace and comfort in praying the rosary. Visitation will be held at McNabb Funeral Home from 5 to 7 with Rosary service starting at 7PM. Monday, March 14, 2011. The funeral mass will be held at 10:00, on Tuesday, March 15th at St. Paul's Catholic Church officiated by Fr. Mike Sinkler. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Engleberg.
