Jonesboro - Lela Ziegenhorn, She died at her home on April 28, 2013, with family members at her side. She was born July 18, 1921, in Balch, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Dallas Jay and Eunice Balch Johnston. Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Ziegenhorn, in 1982; her parents and two siblings, Andrew and Harold. Survivors include her three children, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren: Dr. Dallas (Donna), Matt and Beret Ziegenhorn (Kansas City); Herbert Douglas Ziegenhorn (Fisher and Mazatlan, Mexico); Ann (Larry) Hatcher (Washington, D.C.); Julie Hatcher Mullins (Jason), Brittany, Austin and Jackson (Centreville, VA.); sisters-in-law Nell Johnston (Amory, MS.) and Ina Fite (Kansas City) and several nieces, nephews and cousins. After growing up in Balch, Lela attended Weiner High School where she played basketball, a sport which she followed enthusiastically -- along with football and baseball --throughout her life. She attended Arkansas State University until her marriage to Ralph Herbert Ziegenhorn in 1940, and move to Fisher. Her life there focused on her family, active participation in Fisher Baptist Church, where she served as clerk for 34 years, and supporting her husband in rice farming, an enterprise carried on by her son, Herbert. Soon after Ralph's death, she moved to Jonesboro. There she became an active member of Central Baptist Church, volunteering in the prayer room, taking part in senior activities and Sunday School, and traveling with friends. Lela delighted in the company of her family and enjoyed several trips with them, from Mexico to Hawaii, as well as hosting summertime visits to the family farm. Traditionally, they occurred on her birthday, a date shared with her daughter Ann that they enjoyed celebrating together over the years. Regardless of the setting, she lit up at the suggestion of a tile rummy game -- which she often won. Her interest in the world around her was life-long. She followed news, politics, and sports on a daily basis through newspapers and television news programs. Lela's favorite color was pink, and she surrounded herself with it in all shades. She loved sitting in the midst of the azaleas, petunias, impatiens, and geraniums on her patio while visiting with people she loved. Lela was known for a quiet and considerate way of being that was laced with inner strength, thoughtful evaluation, ever-present faith, wit, and love. She was also admired for her impeccable style. Services will be held on Friday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home, 300 W. Matthews St., Jonesboro, with Bro. Mike Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00. Honorary pallbearers will be Linda, Harvey, and Wixson Huffstetler, Glenda and David Ozier, Nancy and Buddy Huff, Diann Roleson, members of the Central Baptist Church Truthseekers Sunday School class, and her loving caregivers, Henrietta Qualls, Barbara Sutterfield, and Cindy Carle. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Fisher Baptist Church, Fisher, AR., Central Baptist Caleb Mountain Climbers, Jonesboro, or the Ziegenhorn Scholarship -- which she founded in memory of her husband -- at Arkansas State University.
