Jonesboro- Kenneth David Berk, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2020, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. Ken was born on June 9, 1933, in Auburn, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, to Alvin David and Sarah Henrietta Romberger Berk. He enjoyed growing up in the Auburn area surrounded by a loving family with Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.
Ken was a Korean War veteran, having served in the United States Air Force from 1952 - 1956. He met the love of his life, Frances Allene Braden Berk, a short time after joining the Air Force. They were married on December 24, 1952, and enjoyed 59 years of marriage before Fran's death in 2011. Ken's time in the Air Force took him overseas to France, as well as many interesting areas within the United States.
After his military service, Ken later settled his family in Jonesboro and became a master electrician. He later became part owner of Stewart Electric, Inc., where he enjoyed a career as a local electrical contractor. Ken was a member of Nettleton Baptist Church for 60 years where he served faithfully in many capacities throughout the years as a deacon, a teacher, Sunday School director, and on various committees and building projects.
He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren pursue their love of music and sports. He developed a love for music at an early age and played the steel guitar in his high school orchestra, later singing in church choirs and quartets. For the past several years, Ken enjoyed attending the Roundup Music Show in Brookland every Saturday night where he loved meeting new friends and watching the performances of many talented music artists.
Ken was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, and a brother, Ronald Eugene Berk.
He leaves behind family and many friends who loved him dearly and will miss his hugs, heartfelt chats, calming spirit, and words of wisdom. He is survived by his daughters, Linda Allene (Dennis) Thompson, of Piggott and Sharon Colleen (Chris) Groves of Jonesboro; his son, David Lee (Stacey) Berk, of Waupaca, Wisconsin; his sister, Deborah Marie Berk of Palm Bay, Florida; grandchildren, Jonathan Christopher (Alexis) Groves of Rogers, Sarah Gabrielle Groves, Mikala Elizabeth Groves, and Allison Mikel Groves of Jonesboro and Natalie Johanna Berk of Waupaca; great-granddaughters, Dakota Blair Groves of Jonesboro and Emilia Jane Groves of Rogers; and special granddaughter in heart, Daniela Mesa of Bogota, Colombia.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Monday, June 29, 2020 at Nettleton Baptist Church with Pastor Brady Canright officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am with the service to follow. Social distancing guidelines will be followed with masks required. Service will also be viewable on Livestream, on the Nettleton Baptist Church website at www.nettletonbaptistchurch.org, or the Nettleton Baptist Church Facebook page. Burial will follow at the Caraway Cemetery under the direction of Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers will be Dennis Thompson, Chris Groves, Jonathan Groves, Caleb McKenzie, Micheal Fletcher, and George Williamson.
Honorary pallbearers for the service will be the members of the Nettleton Baptist Church Sanctuary Class.
