Obituary

Joseph Hubert "Joe" Peters, age 84 of Hot Springs, AR. passed away December 29, 2009. He was born November 6, 1925 at Pocahontas, AR. Joe Peters is survived by his son Joseph Alan "Joe" Peters, daughter-in-law Carol Peters, of Hot Springs, AR., his sister Lucille Broadway of Madison, IL. and a great grand daughter Lexi Weatherford. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph P. and Blanche Douglas Peters, sisters Blanche Mary Parmer and Catherine Baty and a grandson Joseph Russell "Cody" Peters. He was a Roman Catholic and life member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe was a 1943 graduate of St. Paul's High School, Pocahontas, AR where he was a member of the St. Paul's Band. His business experience started at an early age working in Peters Variety Store (Joe Pete's Store) in Pocahontas, AR. which was owned by his parents. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a military photographer in World War II and Korea. He enjoyed sharing his experiences and the history of both wars. After WWII with the aid of the G.I. Bill, he studied photography at Antonelli School of Photography, Philadelphia, PA. He operated Peters Photo in the late 1940's and early 1950's in Pocahontas, AR. He was the cameraman for the Pocahontas High Redskins football team in the 1950's and early 1960's. After returning from Korea, he and his wife Dorothy purchased the Rendezvous Caf and bus station in Pocahontas, AR. For approximately the next 40 years, he was a ticket agent in Pocahontas, Walnut Ridge, Newport, West Memphis and Little Rock. During those years he sold tickets for Missouri Pacific Bus Lines, Midwest Bus Lines, Continental Trailways, Great Southern Coaches, Dixie Greyhound and Greyhound, Inc. He also worked for Service Merchandise at North Little Rock in the electronic department where he enjoyed demonstrating electronics and he excelled in demonstrating cameras and providing photographic advice. After retirement, he became a volunteer record keeper for his son at Ouachita Coaches, Inc. During the last weeks of his life while battling lung and heart disease, he would still inquire about where each driver and bus was destined. He never lost his passion for photography. He continued to study photography until his death. He never attended a family gathering or any event without his camera. His photo and movie collections will provide lasting memories for other generations. Visitation will be Friday, January 01, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at McNabb Funeral Home, Pocahontas, AR. and a graveside service and burial will be at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Cemetery, Pocahontas, AR.
