Obituary

Trumann- Jimmy Wayne Parrish, 79, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Flo Phil Jones Hospice House. He was born February 16, 1935 in Jonesboro to the late Solon and Jessie Berlin Parrish. Mr. Parrish graduated from McCormick High School as Valedictorian and from Arkansas State College (Arkansas State University). He returned to McCormick for his first teaching position, then went to Bay where he began as a teacher, became Superintendent of Schools at Bay, then later moved to Harrisburg Schools as Superintendent. He finished his forty-nine years in Education with the Crowley's Ridge Education Co-op as Director. He volunteered for many years with the March of Dimes and the Red Cross, serving on the Board of Directors for both. He was also instrumental in starting Abilities Unlimited in the Jonesboro area. He was a charter member of S.N.A.P.S. and served on the NEA Basketball Tournament Committee for forty-three years. He served on Craighead Electric Co-op Inc. Board for 20 years, serving as Vice-President for several years. He also served on the Board of Arkansas Rural Electric and was President for a year. He was instrumental in reseeding the sunken lands of the St. Francis River Floodway and served as Chairman of the St. Francis Lake Association. He was a member of the Arkansas Rural Education Association for many years and also a member of the 4 State Rural Education Association as well as a member of the Arkansas Retired Teacher's Association. Mr. Parrish was a member of Southwest Church of Christ. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, as well as a friend to many former students. He is survived by his wife, Myra Baker Parrish; children, Anna Parrish Looney, husband Dennis of Trumann and Mark Parrish of Memphis; two grandsons, Jordan Looney, wife, Hollie and Ethan Looney all of Trumann; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Nell Walton; two brothers, Faye Parrish and Billy Joe Parrish. A celebration of his life will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Southwest Church of Christ with Dr. Jimmy Adcock officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Tuesday, September 16, also at the church. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Danny Blalock, Bobby Benson, Eddie Crain, Kent McDaniel, Bob McKeel and Carol Thetford and as honorary pallbearers, Jerry and Cheryl Cook, Oscar and Sandy Lilly, Janis Francis and Pam Tiner. Lasting memorials may be sent to Southwest Church of Christ.
