George Washington "G.W." Nix, Jr., 97, of Jonesboro, AR, died September 28, 2015, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. Mr. Nix was born March 15, 1918 in Harrisburg, AR, the son of George Washington Nix, Sr. and Gussie Jane Shockley Nix. He lived most of his life in Harrisburg and lived in Jonesboro for the past 22 years. He was a retired carpenter. G.W. was a charter member of South Caraway Baptist Church in Jonesboro where he helped build the church and helped with the placement of the church steeple. G.W. was a World War II veteran in the Third Infantry Division. He served in Italy, Southern France, Germany and Austria. Mr. Nix loved to go fishing and watching his favorite baseball team, the Cardinals. He was loved by his family and friends for his gentle spirit and compassion for others. In addition to his parents, G. W. was proceeded in death by his wife, Corene Swanner Nix, his son Terry Nix, his granddaughter Dianna Nix, his brother, Charles L. Nix, and three sisters, Alma Nix, Mattie Nix Redd and Berneda Nix Heeb. He is survived by his wife, Marian Bryant Nix of Jonesboro, one son Gerald Nix/Judy of Hopkinsville, KY, the mother of Gerald and Terry, Helen Hervey of Tullahoma, TN, one step son James Clem/LeAnn of Jonesboro, AR, three step daughters, Pat Hicks/John of Albany NY, Lucy Hess/Gary of Hattiesburg, MS., and Fran West/Terry of Hardy, AR. Twelve grandchildren, Jodi Dent, Jackie Byrom, Bryan Nix, Mark Clem, Christy Lemmons, Jeremy Terrell, Billy Hicks, Collin Hicks, Michael Hicks, Hank Redd, and Sarah Priebe. Mr. Nix had thirty one great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be from in the 11:00-12:00 on Friday, October 2nd, with the service immediately following in the Chapel of South Caraway Baptist Church in Jonesboro with Pastor Don Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the Harrisburg Memorial Cemetery with full military honors. Gregg-Weston Funeral Home of Harrisburg is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Matthew Hutsell, Jason Whittington, Jason Byrom, Gary Nix, Bryan Nix, and Mark Nix. Honorary Pall Bearers will be the staff at Morning Side Assisted Living. In lieu of flowers please consider the Flo Phil Jones Hospice House or South Caraway Baptist Church in Jonesboro.
