Obituary

Jonesboro- George "Pete" Raymond Gambill went to be with the Lord on May 28, 2025 at the age of 78, He was born to Alwin Glenn and Lela Jane Gambill on December 2, 1946. He graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1965 where he played football and ran track.

He married Shirley Jean Waln on March 11, 1967 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church by Rev. Jewel McCracken. He served active duty in the United States Air Force, stationed in Kansas City Missouri and Wiesbaden Germany. Pete worked for Fred's Dollar Store, Sterlings, and Hurts Grocery. He finished out his career at City Water and Light in the Water and Sewer Department where he retired after 30 years.

He loved his family and cherished his two grandchildren. He is survived by his wife; Shirley Gambill; son, Jon "Chris" Christopher (Dawn) Gambill; grandson, Heith (Hayley) Gambill; granddaughter, Jordan Gambill; his brother Dennis "Demo" (Linda) Gambill; sister, Tina Tillman; half-sister, Sherry McLauglin; aunt, Mary Lincoln; brother in law, Ronnie (Shirley) Waln; nephews, Justin Waln Tyler Tillman, and Steve Gambill; niece Tara Tillman; cousins, Ashley Lincoln, Janie Willbanks, Edwina (Frank) Bradshaw, and Keith Manning.

He is preceded in death by both of his parents, Alwin and Jane Gambill, grandparents Raymond and Bernice Lincoln, and George and Oma Gambill, aunt and uncle Ed and Maurine Blakenship, Jimmy Lincoln, and Doris Weaver; cousins, Joe and Vanita Long, Kathy Manning, Melissa Lincoln Christiano, and Doyle Ray Weaver. Pete had a love for stock car racing, working with his brother Demo, and friends Jerry Hathcoat and Bruce Sutterfield. They traveled all over racing as Gambill Racing. He was a devout Christian, serving as both a Deacon and Men's Sunday School Teacher at Walnut Street Baptist Church. Pete was ready to meet his Lord. He fought a long battle over the past four years and never complained.

A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday June 3, 2025 at 2 PM at the Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Glen Putman officiating. A visitation will precede from 12 pm -2pm at the Chapel. He will be laid to rest in Philadelphia Cemetery following the service.
