Eugene Dewayne Schafer 82 of Pocahontas departed this life August 14, 2023, at NEA Baptist Hospital in Jonesboro, AR.  He was born February 22, 1941, to the late Ervin and Zilla Goforth Schafer in Bunker, MO.  He was an Army veteran and the Postmaster at Smithville. Eugene was a member of Sutton Free Will Baptist Church for 45 years and 30 of those years he served as deacon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Zilla Schafer; brothers, Ray Schafer, Melvin Schafer, Pern Schafer and Carl Schafer; sisters, Earlene Jones and Ruth Tolleson.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donnia Schafer; children, Jeff (Sherry) Schafer, and Lesa (Troy) Grooms; grandchildren, Troy Alan (Kirstin) Andrews, Trevor Scott Grooms and Sabrina Ann Roland; great grandchild, Oscar Ellis Andrews and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the Sutton Free Will Baptist Church with the funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. with Kevin Barnett officiating. Burial will follow in the Sutton Cemetery.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Troy Andrews, Trevor Grooms, Andrew Rogers, Joey McDowell, Doty Reed and Joe Ragsdell.
