IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doyle Dean
Morgan
March 17, 1938 – January 1, 2024
Jonesboro- Doyle Dean Morgan, 85, formerly of Harrisburg, entered into eternal rest New Year's Day 2024 after a lifetime of dedicated hard work to support his family and serving his country honorably in the United States Army.
Born on St. Patrick's Day 1938. Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Beulah Morgan; brothers, Don and Gerald Morgan; sister, Vauda Fahr and one son baby boy Morgan.
Doyle grew up chopping and hand-picking cotton until he got some relief and was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1957, attaining the rank of SPC5. Doyle was also a General Class Amateur Radio Operator call sign: WE5VER. He hand-built numerous mail-order radios from Heath Kit until technology brought Kenwood into the industry.
During his Army years, Doyle was known and recognized by his commanding officers for providing "phone patches" to his fellow enlisted soldiers to talk to their families for free when long-distance was very expensive. During his time of service, he was trained to arm Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules surface to air missiles from underground silos surrounding Chicago, IL.
It was during this time he met his wife, Anne, and they married on November 18, 1961. In 1963, he moved to Memphis, TN to work for International Harvester building cotton pickers for the next twenty years. He was transferred to Springfield, OH to build Navistar trucks, retiring after thirty-four years with the I.H./Navistar Company as an UAW employee.
Doyle will be missed by many as he was a friend to all, enjoying dirt-track and NASCAR racing. A humble man, Doyle always tried to help his neighbor and often worked on the farm of Don, Mark and Mike Morgan during the planting and harvest seasons after he retired. He was a former commander of American Legion Post 14 of Harrisburg also serving in every position within the Post as he worked his way up the chain of command. Always one with words to bring a chuckle out of a snowman. Doyle always saw the glass half-full and did his best to leave a smile on everyone's face.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-two years, Anne Skapick Morgan of the home; sons, Bryan (Kelli) Morgan and Jerry (Caroline) Morgan of Jonesboro; daughter, Carol Beth (Jimmie) Cantrell of Horn Lake, MS; sister, Jeanette (Clyde) Malone of Harrisburg; brother, Larry (Diane) Morgan of Jonesboro; sixteen nephews and nieces, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
