Obituary

Doyle Lee Meeks, 85, of Imboden passed away peacefully on Friday September 28, 2018. Born on April 3,1933 in Nolan Arkansas, he was 1 of 8 children of the late James Arthur Meeks and Stella Nora (Williams) Meeks.

At age 20, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving for 3 years from May 1953 to May 1956. During his tenure he received 4 medals- National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and a Meritorious Unit Commendation. He major course of study was Pole line men, while serving during the Korean War his task was to install telephone poles and connect lines across South Korea to assist with the US war effort. His last rating achieved was Specialist Third Class. Upon receiving his Honorable Release from Active Duty, he continued to serve his county for 8 years in the Army Reserves.

Doyle worked as a Drill Press Operator for American Cabinet, in Rockford Illinois, from January 1953 to May 1953 prior to entering military service, upon completion of his service and prior to returning to Randolph County he worked for Rockford Steal and Del Monte.

Doyle met and then married Maxine Elizabeth Thomas after a brief courtship on Thanksgiving Day in 1963. Doyle opened his open business hauling and harvesting timber, by purchasing and writing contractual agreements to cut timber and hauling it, to local lumber yards. After several years, he applied and was accepted as a contractor for GTE.

Doyle realized the importance of an education, do to his large family, as a child, he was asked to go to work around age 10, to help support his family's livelihood. He quit school to fulfill this obligation, to his parents and siblings. Years later knowing he would not get hired by GTE without his G.E.D. he went back to school in 1973. He received his G.E.D. and was promptly hired as a fulltime employee and functioned as an outside line man and then a foreman until he retired in 1994.

Doyle enjoyed wood working and building things, gardening, bowling, playing pool and shuffle board as well dabbling in the art of making wine. He and his wife Maxine spent their retirement years travelling around the Continental United States including Alaska and Hawaii. His granddaughter Catherine was the apple of his eye and his special "Little Bit." The quality time he spent with her when she visited him and Maxine, when she was a young child, always made his eyes sparkle. He could not help but love and adore his "Mini Me."

Survivors: Son, Dennis (wife Alyssa); granddaughter, Catherine; brothers, Larry Meeks, J.C. Meeks , and Gene Meeks; Sisters, Geneva (Meeks) Leathers, Nona (Meeks) Hargis and Pauline (Meeks) Sweeny.

Doyle is proceeded in death by his parents, his brother Darvin, and his wife Maxine of 49 years.

All services will be held at McNabb Funeral Home Chapel located at 2129 N. Park Street, Pocahontas, AR. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 from 5-7 pm. Another visitation will continue on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 1-2 pm with a Celebration of Life immediately following at 2 pm with Joshua Dement officiating. Burial will follow in Chesser Cemetery in Pocahontas.
