Obituary

Dora Fern Ellis Coonce, 100, of Tulsa, Oklahoma formerly of Pocahontas passed away Saturday, December 4, 2021 at her home.

She was born October 2, 1921 in the Holmes community to the late James Franklin and Winnie James Ellis.  She was a 1940 graduate of Pocahontas High School, worked for Brown Shoe Company, and was a member of Pocahontas First Baptist Church and Shannon Baptist Church prior to moving to Oklahoma.

She married Robert Roland Coonce in December 1952 and they were married 36 years until his death in 1989.  Being raised on a farm during the Depression made a lasting impression on how she handled her affairs.  She was more than thrifty and knew how to get the most out of a dollar.  She was a devout Christian which reflected in how she lived and treated others.

As a homemaker she excelled at making a garden, canning vegetables, and keeping house.  Also, she took care of her father and husband in their declining years. After their deaths she enjoyed excellent health and spent many hours outside working in her yard.  She loved visits from her granddaughters and always made sure to have treats for them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Franklin and Winnie James Ellis; husband, Robert R. Coonce, brothers, Percy Ellis, Russell Ellis, and Frank "Jack" Ellis; sisters, Ann Wallace, Fannie Broadway, Mary Simpson, Martha Edwards, and Louise Simpson.

She is survived by her son, Richard and wife Cindy Coonce of Tulsa, OK; two grandchildren, Meredith Coonce of Tulsa, OK and Madeline Coonce of New York, NY; one brother, Dan Ellis of Pocahontas, and numerous nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

A private graveside service will be held at Randolph Memorial Gardens under direction of McNabb Funeral Home.
