Pocahontas - David Herbert James, 90, of Pocahontas passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019 at St. Bernard's Five Rivers Medical Center.
He was born May 27, 1929 in Pocahontas to the late Tom and Nell James. He was raised and worked on his parents' farm in the Holmes community southeast of Pocahontas. He attended grade school at Surridge and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1946. David graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1950 with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked with various companies and the federal government in Tennessee, Alabama, California, and South Carolina before retiring in 1994.
His first employment was in Memphis where he met and married his first wife and mother of his three sons. After retirement he relocated to Pocahontas where in 1995, he would marry his widowed high school sweetheart Vesta Lee Haynes (Walls). He was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church.
David is preceded in death by his parents; first wife; son, Timothy; and sister Mary James Brown and step-grandson Matt Walls.
He is survived by his wife Vesta Lee of the home; two sons, David Jr (Carmen) James of Palm Harbor, Florida and Steve James of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; five grandchildren, Michelle, Patrick, Zack, Aaron, and Myra; three great grandchildren; step-son Danny (Brenda) Walls of Pocahontas; three step-grandchildren Angel, Brooke and Megan, eight step- great grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas James of Houston, TX and Ronald James of Mountain View, AR and many other relatives and friends.
Throughout David's adult life, until old age dampened his spirit and physical abilities, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, water sports, golfing, travelling, musical activities, dancing, kid's ballgames, working on cars, and visits with his relatives. He especially enjoyed the joint participation in these activities with his wife Vesta Lee.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 28, 2019 from 1-2 PM in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with a funeral service following at 2 PM with Nelson Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.
