Mr. David Cecil Ames of Jonesboro, departed this life Thursday, September 14, 2017, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro, at the age of 84.
He was born March 9, 1933 in Boston, MA, the son of the late William Ames and Ann Bailey Ames.
David married Joyce Gigstad on December 18, 1952 and they enjoyed 64 years together. He was a retired Senior Master Sargent from the USAF after 26 years of active duty service to his country. He was the Superintendent of Aerospace Medicine and was awarded the Bronze Star for his tour in Vietnam. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1977, Dave founded two Christian organizations in England; Lighted Laymen, Dave and Joyce opened their home. Many were led to Christ and some later became pastors. The mission to Marriage Ministry provided couple's marriage counseling and retreat weekends not only in England, but Ireland, India, Germany, Ghana and Spain as well. These ministries changed the lives of many people for the better eternally.
He loved fishing and was also a gifted woodworker and iron worker. With his wife, he authored 6 Christian themed books. He was a member of the Community Fellowship Church in Jonesboro.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Billy Ames.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ames of the home, one son, Michael Ames (Dorothy) of Harrisburg, one daughter, Patricia Gooch (Bernard) of Hawaii, one brother, Gerard Ames (Ruth) of Washington State, one sister, Rowena Ferrell of Chicago, IL, 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
A Memorial Service honoring his life will be Sunday, September 17, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., at the Community Fellowship Church in Jonesboro, with Pat Skarda, Chad Wood and Steve Clark officiating. Services will be followed by full military honors given by the Little Rock AFB Honor Guard. There will be no visitation prior to services.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Gregg-Weston Funeral Home of Harrisburg.
In lieu of flowers, family has requested donations be made to The Methodist Church disaster relief program umcor.org, which is currently active in Texas and Florida with the recent hurricane victims.
