Jonesboro - Charlotte Bloom Hickox, 96, passed away December 13, 2019 in Jonesboro.
Charlotte, the youngest of three children, was born in Helena to Ely and Sophie Bloom. She graduated from Helena High School and came to Jonesboro to attend Arkansas State College. She was a popular and well liked member of the student body, active in many college activities, editor of the college newspaper, performed in the a cappella choir and numerous theatrical productions, and sang with The Statesmen dance orchestra. She graduated with a bachelor of science in education the morning of August 5, 1943, and that afternoon married the love of her life, Bill Hickox. They were married 50 years and raised three daughters. She later earned a Masters degree in education from the University of Mississippi.
Charlotte and Bill started married life in Mobile, Alabama, before beginning their teaching careers in Lebanon, Missouri, and Bird City, Kansas. Returning to Jonesboro, Charlotte taught English, choir, journalism, and directed the annual school plays at Jonesboro High School for many years. Charlotte also taught private voice lessons, directed choirs in several Jonesboro churches, sponsored youth groups and Brownie Scouts, taught archery and softball in the summers at the Community Center, and was an active member of the local music club. Leaving Jonesboro she taught in high schools in Batesville, Mississippi and Cabool, Missouri, and for almost a decade at the high school and junior college in Meridian, Mississippi. A life change took Charlotte and Bill to the state of Connecticut where they lived for almost 20 years. Retirement, in 1989, brought them back to Jonesboro. Never one to rest on her laurels Charlotte was an active volunteer in the gift shop at St. Bernard\u0027s Hospital and created and co-ran the used book store that generated funds for the Jonesboro Public Library.
Charlotte possessed a beautiful soprano voice, could create incredible stage sets and parade floats, could play a mean hand of bridge or gin rummy, and had a wicked sense of humor. Many of her students will remember her as small but mighty and still regard her as a mentor and more than a caring teacher.
Charlotte is survived by her three daughters, Becky (Jack) Moseley, Molly (Bob) Simpson, and Phyllis (Allen) Heald, former son-in-law Barry Posey, nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William A. Hickox, infant son William Morris Hickox, parents Ely and Sophie Bloom, and siblings Sylvia Weiner and Melton Bloom.
A graveside service will be 11:00 Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Gregg-Langford-Bookout Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlotte\u0027s name to The Jonesboro Public Library or Arkansas State University Theatre Department.
