Obituary

Charlene Omega McCarroll, 95, of Pocahontas, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Five Rivers Medical Center.

Charlene was born November 6, 1924 in Hamil to the late Gola and Melissa Bellah Jackson.

She grew up in the Hamil-Brakebill area and attended the Hamil one-room schoolhouse that is now a church. The teacher she most admired was Vival Seawel, who taught at Brakebill. Her family moved to the Carter district, and she finished the 8th grade in the two-room Carter school that is now a home. She attended Pocahontas H.S., but married before graduating. After receiving her GED, she took many specialized classes including sign language, which she utilized during her 21 years of work for San Bernadino, CA City Schools. Her first job was at Terry Waldron's store in Pocahontas, selling everything from needles to horse collars. One of her earlier interesting jobs was to assemble modules for the instrument panel of the Gemini and Apollo projects for NASA. She retired form San Bernardino School to care for her husband, Eugene McCarroll (July 7, 1987 of Engelberg, AR) who passed away Dec. 5, 1987, three weeks after retirement.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Charlene was certified in sign language and retired from California's education system where she worked with the severely handicapped at Children's Education Center. She received Commendations for Expertise in Sign Language and Outstanding Care for Handicap Children. She was a longtime member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Pocahontas.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Walter McCarroll; brother, William "Jack" Jackson; and son, Thomas McCarroll.

Charlene is survived by 1 sister, Theda Lee Clarke; four children, Robert (Virginia) McCarroll of Southerlin OR, Rebecca (Rodger) Bottrell of Chesterton IN, Mary Bradshaw of Pocahontas, and Jerry McCarroll of Roseburg OR; ten grandchildren, Robert "Robby" McCarroll, LeeAnn (John) Williams, both of Oregon, David (Cindy) Bottrell of North Carolina, Daniel (Davina) Bottrell of Kentucky, Stacia (Scott) Hanks of Kansas, Caleb (Mary) Bottrell of Maryland, Melissa Bottrell, and Rebecca Joy (Clint) Schriber, both of Indiana; three nieces, Lee Clarke of Memphis, Vickie and Susan Jackson; nephew, Paul Clarke; and many great-grandchildren. Charlene is also survived by Danny and Betty Casady; Shannon Bettis; and all caregiving support and good

Visitation will be Thursday, May 14, from 1-2 PM in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with the funeral service following at 2 PM with Nelson Henderson and Rodger Bottrell officiating. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery.
