Jonesboro - Buell Henry Carl Crider died January 10, 2016, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. He was born January 23, 1918, to Henry and Etta Crider in Whitehall, Arkansas. Buell graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1939 and from Shelby School of Aeronautics in 1941. He married his high school sweetheart, Hazel Nelms Hall, on Christmas Day, 1941. They recently celebrated their 74th Wedding Anniversary with family. Buell served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a B-24 bomber pilot and bomber flight instructor. One of his cadet students was Robert Clause, the father of his future daughter-in-law. His medals, ribbons and other memorabilia can be viewed at The Wings of Honor Museum in Walnut Ridge. Buell worked as the Assistant Manager and Pilot for Roberts Rice Mills and later Roberts and Roberts in Weiner from 1948 to 1986. He was very proud to be one of the original co-signers to the loan that initiated the annual Arkansas Rice Festival in Weiner 40 years ago. He had leadership roles in the Poinsett County 4-H Club, the Weiner Lions Club, and The First Methodist Church in Weiner. Buell and Hazel moved to Jonesboro in 1961 and became active in The First United Methodist Church. After his retirement in 1986, he joined the St. Bernards Auxiliary, becoming the first man to do so, and served them for 19 years. He was also very proud to be a Lifetime Member of the NEA Fly Fishing Club. His flies have proven successful in all 50 states. Buell and Hazel were residents at St. Bernards Village for 14 years and moved into St. Bernards Villa when it opened last year. Buell is survived by his wife Hazel; his sons, Carl and Terry; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His siblings, Raymond, Lucille and Russell, preceded him in death. Visitation will be at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home, 300 W. Matthews Ave, Jonesboro, from 6-8 p.m., Friday, January 15. The funeral service will be in the chapel at The First United Methodist Church in Jonesboro on Saturday, January 16, at 2 p.m. with Revs. John Miles and Patty Soward officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers are Michael Ames, Brian Crider, Joseph Crider, Michael McGowan, Brian Rodriguez, and William See. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Cobb, Ronnie Crider, Dr. Ray H. Hall, Jr., Dr. Michael Lack, Dennis Reed, Bill Roberts, Dr. David Weingold, and Tommy Wofford. Lasting memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Jonesboro.
