Jonesboro- Brenda Corrine Shields, 68, departed this life on Friday, September 7, 2018.
She was born October 2, 1949 to Shirley J. (Rowe) and Julius Knake in West Branch, Michigan.
Her accomplishments include being the first female Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Gladwin, MI, obtaining her Licensed Practical Nurse degree and working as a charge nurse in multiple facilities in Michigan. She was the first licensed foster home in Flint, Michigan and received the Key of the City of Flint for her work with foster children. After retiring to Arkansas, she obtained the level of 2nd Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol.
She volunteered with Girl scouts as a leader, co-leader, and parent volunteer for her daughters and several of her granddaughters spanning over fifteen years. She entered many county fairs and won Homemaker of the year in Gladwin County, Michigan. After retiring to Arkansas, she acted as a Judge in many fairs in and around Jonesboro.
Her lifetime's work was investing the family tree and our ancestry. She also was an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting and embroidery, scrapbooking, gardening, canning and food preservation and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley J. (Rowe) Lane; grandparents, Jesse and Doris Rowe; two brothers, Thomas Lane and Timothy Knake; a sister, Linda Lane; a brother-in-law, Bruce Shields; two granddaughters, Elizabeth M. Shields-Wade and Alicia M. (Bolles) Graves and several cousins.
She is survived by her husband Michael D. Shields, three daughters, Jennifer M. (Shields) Hook of Jonesboro, Jessalee M. Shields (Gary) of Manila and Christal M. Shields (Daniel) of Collinsville, Ok; two sons, David F. Shields of Gladwin, MI and Joseph M. Shields (Sarah) of Cedar Springs, MI; five brothers, Alan Knake (Terri) of Waterford, MI, Brian Knake (Sybil) of Punta Gorda, FL, Mark Knake of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Patrick Lane of Key Largo, FL and Russell Lane (Kurt) of Pinellas Park, FL; a sister, Tami Murray (Patrick) of Sebastian, FL; a brother-in-law, Jim Shields (Kathy) of Tocca, GA; a sister-in-law, Pamela (Shields) Rose of Davidson, MI; six granddaughters, Amanda M. Bolles of Fort Smith, Kathleen Hook of Jonesboro, Chelsea Saul (Isaac) of Sioux Falls, SD, Brianne Saul (Cameron) of Owasso, OK, Megan Shields of Mt. Pleasant, MI, and Michelle Shields of Gladwin, MI; three grandsons, Matthew Shields of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Michael Forcelle of Collinsville, OK and Andrew Shields of Cedar Springs, MI; four greatgrandchildren, Devon Shields of Gladwin, MI, Danica Graves of Arkadelphia, Jadance Shields of Gladwin, MI and Chloe Tomlinson of Owasso, OK.
A celebration of her life will be 2:00 pm Monday, September 10, 2018 at Family Fellowship Baptist Church under the direction of Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Blackwood officiating.
The visitation will be from noon until 2:00 pm Monday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mrs. Shields favorite charities of St. Jude's or St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, SD.
