"Sonny" Dryer
September 21, 1936 – April 29, 2022
Jonesboro – Aldwin Carter "Sonny" Dryer, 85, passed away Friday, April 29, 2022 at Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House.
He was born in 1936 to Aldwin Dallas Dryer and Leo Vivian Carter Dryer in Jonesboro. Sonny graduated from Jonesboro High School Class of 1954 where he enjoyed playing football. He attended the University of Arkansas and graduated with a degree in Agriculture in 1958. Sonny was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and was a life-long Sig.
He began farming in 1958 and later raised cattle. He was a third generation farmer and cotton ginner. Later he worked in construction in Jonesboro and Cherokee Village. After retiring he founded the Carter Dryer Real Estate Appraisal Service with his son, Charles as his partner.
Carter was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. He served as a deacon for fifty-five years, serving as chairman for a number of years. He taught Sunday school and served on numerous committees thru the years and made mission trips to Guatemala and Mexico.
Carter served on the boards of Williams Baptist University, the Jonesboro Church Health Center, and the Community Development Board of Union Planters Bank.
He loved to hunt and for many years never missed a duck or deer season. He maintained a life-long interest in golf and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Carter is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, LaVelle Panneck Dryer; his daughter, Kathleen Dryer of Eureka Springs; son, Charles Carter Dryer of Jonesboro; five grandchildren, Christopher Dryer, Victoria Dryer Collins (Josh), Elizabeth Dryer, William Dryer and Jacob Dryer; his sister, Charlotte Dryer Melling (Duane) of Ipswich, Mass; a sister-in-law, Judy Panneck of Richardson, Texas; two nieces and a nephew.
A celebration of his life will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2022 at Gregg- Langford Bookout Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Reeves officiating.
Visitation from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers are the Deacon body of First Baptist Church, Josh Collins, Duane Melling, George Osborn, Buddy Huff, Don Bailey, and Don Bridger.
The family wishes to thank the St. Bernards Home Hospice and Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House who made his last days more comfortable with exceptional professionalism.
