Obituary for Sarah Martha Barrett Watkins

Bono - Sarah Martha Barrett Watkins was called home by her Lord Wednesday January 9th, 2019. She was born October 24th, 1921 near Black Oak.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents Marzee Cate Barrett and Sophia Emma Mengers Barrett; her husband, Willard Watkins, and her brother, Monroe Cate Barrett.

She is survived by her sister Mary Eunice Barrett Dunn of Memphis, TN; three step-children – Bobby Watkins, Susan Hicks, and Jimmy Watkins all of near Gilmer, TX; a niece, Jane Barrett of Clarksville; a nephew, Charles (Chuck) Barrett and wife Ginger of Shalimar, FL; a nephew, Robert Monroe (Bobby) Dunn, wife Vickie, and daughter Sarah Katherine (Katie) all of Germantown, TN; along with a host of cousins, friends and former students.

Sarah, along with her mother and dad moved when she was 2 into the house on Highway 63 North, near Bono, that she grew up in and had lived in for the last 35 years. She started school at Herman School until the school burned. She then transferred to the Arkansas State College (ASU) Training School where she graduated from high school in 1939. Sarah was also active in Herman Missionary Baptist Church while growing up where her Dad was Sunday School Superintendent. She enrolled in the University of Arkansas in the fall of 1939, riding the train from Jonesboro to Fayetteville with a single trunk to hold all of her belongings. Sarah graduated from the U of A in the spring of 1943 with a BSHE degree and later earned her MSHE degree also from the U of A. She began teaching Home Economics in the fall of 1943 at Gillam where she taught for 3 years. Sarah also was the Home Economics teacher for 2 years at Keiser before moving to Tuckerman in the fall of 1948. Over the next 4 decades, Sarah positively influenced the lives of hundreds of young people, showing them the correct way to do everything from cooking to table manners. She retired from the Tuckerman School System in 1984 where they dedicated the new Sarah M. Barrett Home Economics building in her honor.

After retiring, Sarah moved back home to the house she grew up in near Bono to help care for her aging parents who passed away over the next few years. She reconnected with her childhood sweetheart Willard Watkins in 1989. They were married on November 24, 1990 and enjoyed many happy years together until his death on June 5th, 2005.

Sarah kept in contact with many of her former students on a regular basis. (Some of them 2 and 3 generations of the same family!) She communicated through cards, letters, calls, and personal visits until her death. She was always interested in them, their families and how everyone was doing. Scores of them came to see her at her 90th birthday party in 2011.
Sarah enjoyed flowers, gardening, birds (Especially Cardinals and Humming Birds), and keeping up with all her relatives along with their families. She was instrumental in perpetuating the Watkins – Barrett family history and the annual family reunion. Sarah was the repository of all family information and updates for over 35 years. She was a member of the Arkansas Home Economics Association and an elected Representative to the National Conference, a lifetime member of the Arkansas Education Association, a member of First Baptist Church Jonesboro, the FBC Ladies Phebean Sunday School Class and the FBC HomeLink Ministry.

The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 pm, Monday at First Baptist Church Jonesboro.

A celebration of her life will be at 2:00 Monday at the church with Dr. Gregory Darden officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home.
